I enjoyed taking Human Growth and Development. When I started the class I was not sure what it even was. A lot of the topics that we went over were new to me. I do not have children so the different ways of raising children was new. Breast feeding seems very strange. It seems to be a very personal experience. I did not know there was so many different thoughts and beliefs in different cultures on such a simple thing. It is hard for me to grasp the connection between a mother and child. Watching the videos really helped me to see how mothers and children are in different cultures and countries.
I find it very interesting the developmental stages of the brain and how it changes throughout childhood. The different tests they did to show what different children would do with the same situation. The object permanence test is fun to watch. It really shows a huge difference in development. How children understand death at different ages is also very interesting. Some kids think that the person is simply gone.
Writing the signature assignments were a challenge for me. Each one would challenge me in a different way even though it was the same topic. Having to read assignments that other students posted helped me get an idea of how to write my own paper. I really liked giving and receiving feedback. It really helped me to get a different view from another student. Getting suggestions on things I could change in my paper. Breaking it down in to sections made writing the final paper a lot easier.
I will remember the outline for the feedback assignments in a year. It was simple but important. I did not know how to give feedback before this class. I feel I learned how to give feedback that can be helpful. Having to give feedback on different days was a great idea. It made me really have to pay attention each day to what was due. I was not able to rush through and answer everything in one sitting. I will also remember how diverse cultures are. If you look at a developed country and compare to developing countries the cultures are very different. Other countries seem to have the women stay home and care for the kids. The men work and provide for their families. I am really lucky to live in The United States where women are able to pursue different paths. I would not like to stay home cook and watch kids. There is nothing wrong with that but I am grateful for the freedom to choose.
I learned a lot of different things about myself as a student. When I started this class and had to write my first paper I was really scared of doing the assignment wrong. I did not understand the instructions completely I just guessed and wrote something. I thought about dropping the class and take writing first. On the second paper I emailed the teacher for some clarification. I am stubborn and did not want to ask for help. I realized it is a lot easier than I had made it out to be. I think I did well on my papers. I have not had to write a paper since high school so it was pretty scary. I know I need to take English and some sort of writing class to improve my grammar.
I learned a lot about online classes and computers in general. I had no clue how to get into the programs. It definitely is a whole new learning experience. It is very new to me. I caught on towards the middle of the class. It was hard jumping between the different programs and assignments on different websites.
I also learned that I don’t do well trying to do homework at work and on lunch breaks. I get to distracted. I take my computer to work every day just encase I get some time. Even if I get time I don’t do the home work. I work the best by myself or later at night when I do not have to worry about anything else. I like the night because my mind can slow down and I do not feel like I am supposed to be doing something else. I need deadlines. The last online class I took it was all due at the end of the semester. I put it off till the very end and had to finish it all with in the last month. It was a good learning experience but very stressful. I really like having deadlines every week or every other week. It keeps me on track. I still put it off till the last minute but I don’t get behind. Online classes can be hard because there is no set schedule. I have to learn to have discipline and set time to do my school work. I am slowly learning to adjust.
I took to many classes this semester. I found out that I need to pace myself and not try to take on to much at a time. It is better to take less classes and get good grades then take a lot and get not very good grades. It is hard but will be worth it in the end.
